You must cover your face in this Texas city to curb COVID-19 or face up to $1,000 fine
You could face a hefty fine for not covering your face in Laredo, Texas, during the coronavirus pandemic.
On Tuesday, the Laredo City Council mandated that a person entering a building that is not their home must cover their nose and mouth with a mask, scarf, bandanna or fabric, the Laredo Morning Times reported.
People who don’t could face a fine between $50 and $1,000, according to the newspaper.
The order went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday and was approved through April 30, KGNS reported.
Those working in their yard or garage are not required to cover their faces, according to the outlet, but those using public transit, entering buildings — including offices — or pumping gas must have something covering their mouth and nose, the Morning Times reported.
Laredo is in south Texas and sits on the U.S.-Mexico border.
On Wednesday, Surgeon General Jerome Adams told “Good Morning America” that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reassessing its guidance that the general public does not need to wear masks, USA Today reported.
“We’ve learned there’s a fair amount of asymptomatic spread, and so we’ve asked the CDC to take another look at whether or not having more people wear masks will prevent transmission of the disease to other people,” he said, according to the outlet.
Adams elaborated further on Twitter by reminding the public that while there’s little evidence suggesting masks benefit the person wearing one, they can help prevent an infected person without symptoms from spreading the virus.
If you choose to wear a face covering, Adams had these suggestions:
- Wash your hands before and after.
- Don’t touch your face while wearing the mask.
- Save N95 masks for frontline workers.
- Remember masks are not a replacement for social distancing.
