Fishing? Golf? Weddings? We answer your coronavirus questions about leisure in Fort Worth
Tarrant County’s restrictions to stay at home have left many of us wondering what exactly we can do with the time we set aside for leisure. Here are the answers to some common questions that have come to the Star-Telegram’s coronavirus helpline. And if you want to ask us anything else — or share any story tips — use the Google Survey at star-telegram.com.
Is it OK to take a boat to the lake to fish?
Yes. The Tarrant Regional Water District says all regular lake activities are allowed under the county’s regulations. You can fish, and you can go out on a boat. You must, however, follow social distancing guidelines and stay 6 feet away from others. And you should not be out having a gathering with nine friends. Public health experts recommend limiting your time with other people to family.
Also: Be sure to check water levels.
I note that several city golf courses are open as well as a number of private country clubs and daily fee courses. I’m not certain how to take this ... I love golf but I’m not certain driving to the club to play golf with my buddies fits anywhere in the shelter in place template that I’ve seen.
Public health experts are saying not to interact with people outside your family, even friends right now. So they would not recommend going golfing with your regular buddies. However, if your family at home needs an escape it would certainly be an option for recreation — just don’t get too close to any other golfers.
Some courses are taking measures to try to prevent possible spread of the virus by taking out the pins and the rakes and limiting carts to one person — if offering them at all.
My fiancé and I were supposed to get married in April. Our venue canceled, but we rented a pavilion in a park and were going to do a 10-person, socially distanced ceremony to still get married. Is this allowed?
You are still allowed to gather with people in your household and the parks are still open, per Tarrant County’s executive order. So you are certainly able to have a wedding, as long as your wedding party maintains social distance (6 feet away). Public health experts recommend avoiding friends at this time and the Tarrant County executive order stresses only gathering with members of your household, i.e. family, so a traditional wedding party is not an option.
Am I correct in understanding that we can drive to a park to walk as long as we stay 6 feet away, right?
Yes that’s correct. Stay 6 feet away from others.
Can people go for drives, sightsee without leaving their cars? Can they go to a park to walk or just sit in the car?
People are allowed to leave their houses for solitary exercise or leisure activities (although they should limit the instances they leave). The Fort Worth police are not pulling people over or hosting checkpoints to see why people are on the roads.
