Three SMU students test positive for coronavirus after leaving campus for spring break
Three Southern Methodist University students tested positive for COVID-19 after leaving campus for spring break, the Dallas institution’s president said Wednesday.
The time between the students’ last time on its campus and their confirmed positive tests were within the virus’ estimated 14-day incubation period, SMU President R. Gerald Turner wrote in a letter. The students are recovering at home under the care of physicians.
A graduate business student who lives off campus attended one class on March 11 after returning from an international study trip and tested positive at a hospital on March 15, Turner wrote.
An undergraduate in Dedman College who was living alone in Loyd Commons was last on campus on March 13 and was tested after returning to his or her family home outside Texas.
Another Dedman College undergraduate who lives in a private, off-campus residence was last on campus on March 13 and was tested after returning to his or her family home outside Texas.
The university declined to release the students’ names to the public .
“However, the University is making every effort to inform individuals most likely to have been in close proximity to these students, such as classmates, faculty members and members of the graduate student’s international study team,” Turner wrote. “Those persons more likely to have been in contact with them are being advised to self-monitor for symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath.”
