Fort Worth’s new indoor golf club is an ace. Look inside
If you’re a golf lover looking for a new place to practice away from the Texas summer heat, or you’re wanting to try your swing for the first time, a new spot in Fort Worth’s Near Southside might be for you.
All the way from New York’s Flatiron District, the indoor golf club Five Iron Golf has opened its first location in Texas, at 824 W. Daggett Ave., by Morton’s Tavern and Big Yummy Grill.
“People think it’s just like, ‘Only golfers can be here, serious golfers,’ — no, this is for everyone to play,” said Emily Villarreal, the new location’s general manager.
The 10,000-square-foot space has 12 Trackman golf simulator bays, as well as “multisport” simulators where players can choose from a wider variety of games, plus a full bar. The club opened in May, with an official grand opening held on June 11.
Golf aficionados can use high-tech cameras to analyze their swings or purchase professional lessons — even an hourlong swing evaluation. Five Iron also offers clinics and custom golf club fittings.
The new location is a labor of love, and a family effort, said Jim Waterman, the co-owner of Five Iron along with his son Austin. The two own several The Good Feet Store locations across the Metroplex.
“I found out a few months into it that I had … prostate cancer, and I was having to go into chemo,” Waterman said. “My son stepped up and did all this … it was a blessing to have him step up and take care of everything, so I didn’t have to worry about it.”
Austin brought in local artists to paint murals throughout, he said, to give it a distinct Fort Worth charm.
“We could have started anywhere,” Austin said. “We could have started in Dallas, but we see the potential here, and how much it’s growing, and we want to give something to do for people around here that’s a little different.”
Along with its entertainment offerings, Five Iron offers a full selection of food and drinks. A “Texas local” menu includes fried pickles, fried okra, and breakfast taco appetizers, and a selection of cocktails including the “Back 9 Smash” with vodka, blackberries. lemon, mint and soda, and a pecan espresso martini.
A larger drink menu has over a dozen options, with menus dedicated to specialty shots (the “birdie juice” shot includes peanut butter whiskey and pineapple juice) and mocktails.
On the food menu, options include a variety of shareables — such as the baja shrimp skewers and the pimento cheese fries — plus pizza, handhelds, and a selection of tacos. There’s a salad and a grain bowl, too, and desserts.
A founding membership costs $129 per month, and includes 90 minutes of free golf every day, according to the Five Iron website,
A half-hour simulator session generally costs about $35, with the cost going up for every half-hour increment. A one-hour swing evaluation costs $99.
Five Iron also hosts work events, parties, and other special occasions. Visit fiveirongolf.com/locations/dfw-near-southside to learn more.
