Wholesale club to begin construction of first Texas store in Fort Worth this year
BJ’s Wholesale Club is planning to begin construction on its first Texas location later this year in Fort Worth.
Construction of the over 106,000 square foot store is expected to begin in June, according to permits filed with the state on Thursday. Located at 5901 Altamesa Blvd., near Chisholm Trail Parkway, the project is estimated to cost $9.5 million to build.
BJ’s did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the project.
BJ’s is a membership-based warehouse store where shoppers can buy items in bulk and get gasoline at discounted prices. Stores usually have delis, bakeries and a wide range of products, including produce, fresh foods, household goods, appliances and clothing. Membership starts at $60 per year.
The Massachusetts-based company has 250 clubs and 187 gas stations across 21 states.
BJ’s isn’t shying away from its competition in Fort Worth. The wholesale retailer’s new location will be about a five minute drive from the nearest Costco, one of its biggest rivals. The closest Sam’s Club will be just under four miles north of the new store.
The retailer’s expansion into Texas is part of its rapid growth in recent years. BJ’s has opened over 30 clubs in the past five years, and has about 7.5 million members. The company opened its first store in Kentucky in January.
Opened in 1984, BJ’s revenue was over $19 billion for the 2023 fiscal year.
