Flying out of DFW Airport for Thanksgiving? So are over 3.1 million other travelers

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport expects this Thanksgiving travel season to be its busiest ever.

An estimated 3.1 million people will likely travel through the airport between Nov. 21 and Dec. 3., over 5% more than last year.

The most popular destinations for travelers flying out of DFW for Thanksgiving are expected to be Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. Over 260,000 people will pass through DFW on the busiest days of the Thanksgiving travel season.

Over 81 million people traveled through DFW in 2023, making it the third-busiest airport in the world.

Construction at the airport could disrupt some travelers’ plans. DFW broke ground on a new $1.6 billion, 15-gate terminal on Tuesday. Work on a $9 billion capital improvement plan is ongoing across the airport.

The Express South parking lot was permanently closed Sept. 9 to make room for the new Terminal F. The airport has an Express North lot, as well as north and south remote lots, which travelers can prebook to save up to 50%.

DFW recommends arriving at least two hours before a flight’s scheduled departure. Travelers can check DFW’s website for estimated security wait times at all checkpoints and live parking availability.

Those driving to the airport can book parking online ahead of their trip and check DFW’s roadway work zones map to avoid road closures.
