New Target in southwest Fort Worth will look very different than city’s older stores

Is a new Target coming to far southwest Fort Worth?

Records filed Friday with the city suggest developers are looking to build a future Target off Chisholm Trail Parkway at McPherson Boulevard, in the rapidly growing southwest Fort Worth corridor. The site is not far from a likely future H-E-B grocery store.

The records filed with the city are for a drainage study on 34 acres on the northwest corner of Chisholm Trail and McPherson, currently an empty tract. Such studies are the very preliminary first steps that developers take before moving forward with projects.

This would be the first Target in this part of Fort Worth. The closest existing Target is at Interstate 20 and Chisholm Trail, about six miles north. There also is a Target in Burleson to the south.

A new Target in far southwest Fort Worth would likely look very different than the city’s older Targets. Late last year, Target unveiled dramatic changes to its store designs, which by 2024 will be used in all new construction.

One of the most noticeable changes is more light. New Targets will have larger windows allowing for more natural light, instead of the windowless stores shoppers are used to.

Target’s new design language includes more windows to offer natural light, as well as structural features and products that reflect the local market.

The McPherson Boulevard corridor, and Summer Creek Drive just to the east, are lined with new subdivisions. Construction in the area has been on a whirlwind pace. New restaurants along McPherson near the parkway include Chick-fil-A, Whataburger, Chili’s and Raising Cane’s.

The possible future H-E-B is on the northeast corner of Chisholm Trail and McPherson. H-E-B purchased the land at The Shops at Chisholm Trail Ranch in March but has been mum about its plans. The grocery chain has only said the land purchase is in “anticipation of (the company’s) future needs.”
