Travelers who worried Tuesday that they could become stranded at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport because of a massive snowstorm that caused havoc in the northeastern U.S. instead found pleasant surprises.
At DFW, they encountered sunny skies and afternoon temperatures in the 70s and relatively few canceled flights. As a bonus, a few restaurants greeted customers at Terminal D with generous samples of free food — part of a promotion aimed at encouraging people to eat more healthfully when flying.
“Our granddaughter has a birthday, so we’re going to be there no matter what,” said Edith Harris, who along with husband Kennith drove a little more than an hour to DFW from their home in Henrietta to catch a flight to Washington, D.C.
They were concerned about a cancellation but pushed forward with the trip and were delighted to learn early Tuesday that the flight was scheduled to depart on time. And they each enjoyed free bowls of Genghis Grill fare before going through security at Terminal D.

Boston, other parts of New England and Long Island, N.Y., were slammed with blizzardlike conditions, including 70-mph winds. Some areas received 2 feet of snow. But Washington, D.C., was mostly spared, and by Tuesday morning, businesses and public transit systems in the nation’s capital as well as cities such as New York and Philadelphia were reopening.
At DFW, 30 flights were canceled Monday — fewer than on many days when weather isn’t a factor, spokeswoman Cynthia Vega said. An additional 55 departing and 56 arriving flights were canceled Tuesday, she said.
Patricia Blabrie, a vacationing child-care worker from Montreal, arrived at DFW on Tuesday morning to catch a connecting flight to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. She enjoyed samples of stuffed grape leaves and hummus from Wild Bleu Martini Bar and smiled as she took in the sunny skies visible from the panoramic windows in Terminal D.
Blabrie and three travel companions had no trouble getting out of Montreal, she said.
“It was snowing in Montreal, but there were no delays,” she said.
The free samples were part of a “Healthy+Happy” campaign to give travelers better food choices, Vega said. All of DFW’s more than 150 restaurants have at least one low-calorie, low-sodium, cholesterol-free, plant-based or high-fiber entree, she said.
