Blue Bell’s Rocky Road back
It’s been a rocky road for Blue Bell ice cream the last couple of years, but now Rocky Road, the flavor is back.
The Brenham-based company announced the rich, dark chocolate ice cream with chopped almonds and mini-marshmallows returned to store shelves Monday. It’s the latest flavor added to Blue Bell’s roster since the company’s beloved ice cream returned to North Texas four months ago, following a disasterous listeria recall in March 2015.
The 109-year-old company was teetering on the edge of disaster before Fort Worth billionaire Sid Bass made a white knight investment of $125 million and helped it rebound from the worst scandal in its history.
Since then, Blue Bell has been able to slowly reopen its production facilities and has put new safety practices into place. Last week, the state gave the company a $500,000 grant to enhance employee training and skills.
Rocky Road is available in half gallon and pint sizes, but quantities are limited so check with the local grocery stores. Blue Bell also introduced a cherry vanilla flavor earlier in February.
