Texas Motors Ford sold to Asbury Automotive Group in Georgia

Texas Motors Ford, a 70-year-old Fort Worth dealership, has been bought by Asbury Automotive Group of Duluth, Ga., one of the largest automotive sales and service companies in the U.S.

Texas Motors Ford has been rebranded to David McDavid Ford Fort Worth. Asbury’s six other Texas dealerships also operate under the David McDavid name.

McDavid, who started as a car dealer in Weatherford and was later based in Irving, sold his dealerships to Asbury in 1998. He stayed with Asbury for five years after the sale.

Texas Motors Ford was sold by Clifford Johnson, only its third owner. At the time of the sale in December, it was generating about $140 million in annual revenue, Asbury said.

The dealership, which sells new, used and fleet/commercial vehicles, is at 300 W. Loop 820. Johnson moved it there after buying the property, off of White Settlement Road, in 2001 and building a 93,000-square-foot showroom.

David Hult, Asbury’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, said: “We are looking forward to carrying on the superior quality of service and sales the customers of Texas Motors Ford have come to expect. We welcome our new employees to the Asbury family and are excited about our opportunities in Fort Worth.”

Asbury, which reported 2013 revenue of $5.3 billion, operates 83 dealerships, encompassing 104 franchises for selling and servicing 29 domestic and foreign brands of vehicles. Asbury also operates 24 collision repair centers and three stand-alone used vehicle stores.
