Amazon.com plans to build a fifth fulfillment center in Texas.

In a statement, the Seattle-based e-commerce giant said about 1,000 full-time jobs will be created in San Marcos, 30 miles south of Austin.

Employees at the 855,000-square-foot San Marcos center will pick, pack and ship smaller customer items, such as books, electronics and toys.

Amazon.com operates fulfillment centers in Haslet, Coppell and Schertz, near San Antonio, and has one under construction in Dallas.

The 1.1-million-square-foot Haslet center, which also handles books, DVDs and other small products, opened in 2013 along Westport Parkway in the AllianceTexas development. Employment there has doubled this year to more than 2,000 hourly associates. The company announced in May that it would add 450 workers.

The distribution center in Coppell fulfills orders for bigger items such as televisions.

Amazon has more than 3,500 full-time workers in Texas.
