NewsGuild announces walkout at Star-Telegram amid negotiations over initial contract
Several newsroom employees of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram announced Monday that they are on strike, as the Fort Worth NewsGuild negotiates its first contract with the Star-Telegram and its parent company, McClatchy.
Steve Coffman, president and editor of the Star-Telegram, noted that the newsroom continues to provide coverage for readers, including the trial of Fort Worth police officer Aaron Dean, who fatally shot 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson through the window of her home in 2019.
“The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is serving our communities today, covering the news that matters to Tarrant County and North Texas,” Coffman said. “We look forward to reaching an agreement with our valued employees.”
McClatchy has contracts with bargaining units in several of its newsrooms across the country, including Miami; Sacramento and Fresno, Calif.; Lexington, Ky.; Washington state; Boise, Idaho; and Columbia and Hilton Head, S.C.
Journalists at the Star-Telegram voted to form a union in 2020. Management voluntarily recognized the bargaining unit.
