Time is running out for Texans to file their federal income taxes.

The last day to file 2021 taxes or request an extension to the Internal Revenue Service is Monday, April 18.

Normally, the tax deadline every year is April 15. Thanks to a Washington D.C. holiday, the date was moved to the next business day. The holiday, Emancipation Day, is to celebrate the legislation passed in 1862 that ended slavery in Washington.

Taxpayers requesting an extension have until Oct. 17 to file. Filling out form 4868 with the IRS will give taxpayers the six-month extension.

For those who have filed their taxes, the IRS anticipates that taxpayers will receive their refund within 21 days of filing.
