Health system, medical school to launch physician residency program in Fort Worth

A major nonprofit health system and a city medical school today said they would begin next year to cooperate on a physician residency program.

Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center Fort Worth and the TCU and University of North Texas Health Science School of Medicine will collaborate on the program that will eventually train about 150 physicians each year.

The joint effort will be an element of dealing with an insufficient number of physicians in the Fort Worth area, the health system said. Texas ranks 41st out of 50 U.S. states with 219.4 physicians per 100,000 residents as the national median is 257.6, according to the American Association of Medical Colleges.

The alliance intends to address a physician shortage by “attracting and keeping the best and brightest minds in medicine in the Fort Worth area,” the health system and medical school wrote in a statement.

“With the combination of both organizations’ available resources and aligned mission, we can create a robust and rich academic environment in the Fort Worth community,” Dr. Stuart Flynn, the medical school’s dean, wrote.

The collaboration will advance opportunities for medical education and research, Michael Sanborn, the president of Baylor, Scott & White-Fort Worth, wrote in a statement.

“Our goal is to build upon this foundation that echoes the pillars of outstanding teaching hospitals: patient care, education, and research,” Sanborn wrote.

The medical specialties covered in the program were not included in an initial announcement.

The health system and medical school plan to discuss details of their arrangement at a press conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

“The possibility of doing a residency at Baylor Scott & White is especially exciting to me because it would provide me the opportunity to practice medicine close to home in the Tarrant County area,” Brandon Mallory, a student, said in a video released by the health system.

The TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine opened with a class of 60 students in July. The physician residency program is to be certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
