Talk about sticker shock.

About a month ago, Fort Worth, Arlington and Dallas motorists were paying the least among Texas cities for a gallon of unleaded gasoline. They’re now shelling out the most after a one-week, 14-cent price jump.

Metroplex drivers are paying an average $2.14 a gallon, the most in a survey of the major metropolitan areas and 7 cents above the statewide average, according to a AAA Texas Fuel Gauge report.

During the week of Jan. 16, drivers in the Metroplex were paying $1.79 per gallon.

The cheapest gasoline statewide is in San Antonio, at $2 per gallon, the travel and insurance agency reported. The nationwide retail gasoline price was $2.23 per gallon, an increase of 8 cents in a week.

The statewide average is 9 cents above last week but $1.06 less than a year ago.

AAA spokesman Doug Shupe says February typically marks the start of seasonal refinery maintenance in preparation for the busy summer driving season.
