As her baby drowned, Texas mom chatted on Facebook about drugs. She’s going to prison
A Texas mom chatting on Facebook while her baby drowned in a bathtub is going to prison, according to court records.
She was sending messages about drugs, among other things, police say.
Cheyenne Summer Stuckey, 24, was sentenced to eight years in prison for the death of her daughter, Zayla Hernandez, in her Reno, Texas, home in June 2017.
Stuckey told investigators that she was distracted by Facebook, a loud television and another child as the baby drowned, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. She said Zayla was left alone for just a couple of minutes with the water running, police said.
But investigators found that she was actually on Facebook chatting with two different people for about 18 minutes, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. A neighbor was accusing her of stealing a package in one of the chats. In another, Stuckey was talking about different types of drug paraphernalia, police said.
Stuckey found her baby floating face down in the bathtub and tried to revive the infant but didn’t know how, police said. The baby was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
After the drowning, Stuckey’s twin daughters and son were taken into the custody of child protective services.
