This old-time Fort Worth restaurant has biscuits, Tex-Mex, bargain buffets

North side old-timers have always said some of the best huevos rancheros are at Heaven’s Gate Restaurant.

They are right.

After years of going for the daily all-you-can-eat fried chicken, catfish or weekend breakfast buffet, I strayed to the all-day breakfast menu at the doubly traditional home-cooking restaurant, 3816 N. Main St.

Through its 52-year history under a variety of names — originally Colonial House Restaurant — Heaven’s Gate has been known for serving both Southern and Tex-Mex home cooking at a budget price.

The new name, Christian theme and Ten Commandments decor were added in 2017. Just think of it as the best “gate” for landings at nearby Meacham Airport.

Heaven’s Gate is known around this time of year for Thanksgiving and Christmas buffets feeding roast turkey and ham to long lines of large families.

But it is open every day from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving a full family-restaurant menu of breakfasts and lunches, mostly for under $10.

The cross-cultural menu is unique.

If you want huevos rancheros with a side of biscuits and gravy, or a chargrilled steak or cheeseburger with a beef enchilada, Heaven’s Gate is the place.

Where else can you get a baked potato with fajitas on top?

The Tex-Mex side of the menu is not to be overlooked. The chips taste fresh-fried and come with a smoky chipotle salsa, both better than in the usual diner fare.

When owner Barbie Stanislawski passed away in 2022, the staff carried on her legacy and actually started improving the Tex-Mex side of the menu and adding more items to the daily home-cooking buffet.

And yes, both the huevos rancheros and chilaquiles compare to the old-school favorites on the north side.

One of the first Eats Beat columns in this space 40 years ago was about huevos rancheros back when we had to explain “ranch-style eggs.”

For less than $10, a plate of huevos at Heaven’s Gate comes with a complex salsa on fresh-fried tortillas with a side of beans, home fries or (another cross-cultural option) hash browns.

This breakfast is totally old-school. The plate is not doused in sauce. The salsa flavor stands out. With chips and hot sauce, it’s just enough to kick-start a morning.

Chilaquiles verdes have become more popular than migas in recent years, and Heaven’s Gate has both. The chilaquiles verdes don’t compare to those at newer places like Tesoro, but they are loyal to tradition and the green sauce has some fire.

Breakfast is served all day every day until 2 p.m. But if you’d rather load up on all-you-can-eat bacon, sausage and scrambled egg dishes, the breakfast buffet is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings until 10:30.

Heaven’s Gate’s lunch buffet offers meat loaf, fried chicken, chicken-fried steak, catfish and pork roast daily, with specials each day such as lasagna or beef enchiladas.

The location is 2 miles south of Loop 820 or 2 miles north of the Fort Worth Stockyards. Call ahead for holiday reservations; 817-624-1262, heavensgaterestaurant.com.
