Here’s the best deal for National Cheeseburger Day in Fort Worth

Go ahead and laugh at the sign claiming Mooyah Burgers, Fries & Shakes serves the “best burger in Fort Worth.”

But don’t laugh long.

In burger-deprived far north Fort Worth, Mooyah is not as good as local mainstays like Fred’s Texas or Hollywood Burger. But it definitely beats other corporate chains.

This is the week when the chains rule. Sept. 18 is National Cheeseburger Day, when cheap or free burgers are as close as your smartphone apps.

Mooyah will join in, offering a buy-one-get-one-free deal for existing rewards members. But download the app and create the account by Sept. 17.

Another good special: Connecticut-based Wayback Burgers, which has a location at 13075 Business U.S. 287 north of Saginaw near Haslet, is offering loyalty members $5 double cheeseburgers.

Most fast-food chains are also offering freebies or discounts, usually via the rewards app.

That includes a 50-cent McDonald’s double cheeseburger; a Burger King or Wendy’s bacon cheeseburger with another purchase; and an entire week of specials at Jack in the Box, meaning an entire week of chances to add two tacos for 99 cents.

Savvy Sliders, a new slider chain from Michigan, will offer buy-one-get-one-free sliders. The only Fort Worth-area location is on East Berry Street off Interstate 35W.

None matches Mooyah, a Plano-based company that was launched in 2008 as sort of a Texas version of Virginia-based Five Guys.

Mooyah has had its ups and downs. Some franchises fell by the wayside.

But now, Mooyah often gets better reviews than Five Guys.

The six Fort Worth-area locations include two in far north Fort Worth shopping centers at 7028 Blue Mound Road and also at 9604 Old Denton Road.

A visit to the Blue Mound Road location last weekend proved that Mooyah reaches its target market. Several tables were full of young men or parents with kids chowing down on burgers and the hand-cut, double-fried french fries.

Notably, Mooyah’s burgers are much better and the beef tastes much fresher than at most corporate chains.

The quarter-pound cheeseburger ($6.99, nearly $13 as a combo) actually tastes like one you might make at home. Even the kids’ “little burger” (a $6.99 combo with fries and a drink) has exceptional flavor for a chain.

Top your burger with the usual add-ons or special toppings such as hot bacon jam, onion strings or green chile queso.

Turkey burgers are often disappointing. But Mooyah’s was notably fresh-ground and tasted like a worthy substitute.

Mooyah also goes out of its way to offer black bean burgers and lettuce wrap burgers for paleo or keto diners.

The Blue Mound Road location opens early at 10:30 a.m. daily for lunch and dinner. Other stores in the Alliance area Burleson, Colleyville, Mansfield and Southlake mostly open at 11 a.m.; mooyah.com.
