Kraut is out. Make way for sandwiches, sourdough bagels at new Fort Worth restaurant
How do you change a dark, well-worn German beer hall into a bright, airy sandwich restaurant and bakery?
I have no idea, but the Sour Boule did it.
The Misner family’s restaurant and sourdough bread bakery, bursting at the seams with customers after only a year, has moved next door into part of the former Edelweiss German Restaurant space, 3801 Southwest Blvd. on the Benbrook Traffic Circle.
The new space has an ample dining room and stays open until 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, making it a lunch or early dinner option for families and groups that couldn’t get a seat in the old Sour Boule bake shop.
Now it’s easy to check out the menu of flavorful sandwiches on fresh sourdough, such as the “Spicy” with chipotle turkey, chipotle mayo and pepper jack. Or go a step farther to the “Toxic” on jalapeno-cheese sourdough with fried onions and a spicy pickle.
The best-known Boule sandwich is “The One With Cranberry” and turkey. But there’s also “The One From the Garden,” with spinach, onions, tomatoes, pickles and cheese on rosemary-garlic sourdough.
Honestly, the sandwiches and sides such as macaroni and cheese, chili or soups are big enough to split.
Some patrons never even go for lunch. There’s a completely different Sour Boule clientele for breakfast sourdough bagel sandwiches, sourdough waffles or a “pimiento taco” sausage wrap with pimiento cheese.
It all comes with a wide selection of coffee drinks and smoothies.
Alexis and Lance Misner started in 2022, selling breads and baked goods at farmers’ markets as ”Misner Family Farms,” delivering to customers all over Tarrant and Parker counties.
Before long, their business outgrew their home kitchen and they needed a bake shop. They found one in a former kolache shop that closed.
The addition of meats, sandwiches and grab-and-go items turned the Sour Boule into a full-menu restaurant with everything from avocado toast to a “Sour Elvis” peanut-butter-and-banana sandwich with butter, honey, granola and mint.
The decor includes a fireplace and comfy sofa, along with game tables and a library of board games.
The Sour Boule opens at 6:30 a.m. daily. It serves breakfast, lunch and early dinner Tuesdays though Sundays, and breakfast and lunch Sundays; 682-250-3052, thesourboule.com.
The new Sour Boule is yet another addition to a far west side neighborhood booming with new or refreshed restaurants:
▪ Heirloom Garden Cafe, a garden and patio lunch cafe inside Archie’s Gardenland, 6700 Z Boaz Place;
▪ Terrebonne’s, a new Cajun and Creole restaurant and oyster bar from a Houma, Louisiana, native, 7914 Camp Bowie West Blvd.;
▪ New-ish local favorite JD’s Hamburgers. 9901 Camp Bowie West Blvd.;
▪ Margie’s Italian Gardens, a 70-year landmark reopening within weeks at 9805 Camp Bowie West Blvd.
▪ Local burger and chicken-fried steak favorite Fred’s Texas Cafe, 7101 Camp Bowie West Blvd.;
▪ Contest-winning Enchiladas Ole, 6473 Camp Bowie Blvd.;
▪ A reliable lunch and pie favorite, the Rose Garden Tea Room, having a new burst of success inside an antique mall at 7200 Camp Bowie Blvd.
▪ And two established restaurants consistently among local favorites: Fuego Burger, now at 4400 Benbrook Highway; and Mi Cocula Mexican Grill, 6550 Camp Bowie Blvd.
