Here’s where to find $6 fishbowl drinks for National Margarita Day and Mardi Gras, too

National Margarita Day mixes with Mardi Gras season this year.

The Flying Fish restaurants are set for both.

The Wynne family’s eight Flying Fish restaurants across North Texas have the look and the theme of East Texas fishing camps. They’re known mainly for fried catfish, shrimp and oysters.

But the ever-growing Baja side of the menu now includes fish tacos, snapper Veracruz, a spicy sausage queso and margaritas the size of a giant fishbowl.

They’re $6 on Feb. 22, National Margarita Day.

And they’re big.

So — ironically — a seafood restaurant has one of the best margarita deals.

Flying Fish, 2913 Montgomery St. in Fort Worth and 300 E. Abram St. in downtown Arlington, is a corporate cousin to Rodeo Goat and the Flying Saucer.

It sprang from East Texas roots, but the menu now reaches from Louisiana to the Gulf.

Ten days after Margarita Day comes an even bigger day: Mardi Gras.

Flying Fish doesn’t dole out beads or pour Hurricanes like some Cajun-Creole restaurants. But it always serves a hearty gumbo and has a crawfish platter in season.

The newest premium entree: a spicy redfish.

It’s not like you’d find in New Orleans. But that’s mainly because it’s not over $20.

Flying Fish also has landlubber food such as a grilled chicken platter with chimichurri sauce (a deal at less than $12), a Nashville hot chicken sandwich or deep-fried banana pudding.

You know the Flying Fish restaurants are serious by the selection of hot sauces on each table: Tabasco, jalapeno Tabasco, Louisiana Hot Sauce, Cholula and Irving-based Melinda’s habanero.

Flying Fish restaurants are open for lunch and dinner daily; 817-989-BASS in Fort Worth or 817-303-3335 in Arlington, flyingfishinthe.net.
