Tim Love’s new west Fort Worth croquet club and bar: Like ‘an English country club’

Chef Tim Love’s plan for a former Greek-American grocery in the River District is quite a makeover: to a cocktail bar and English-style croquet club.

Stewart’s Croquet & Cocktails will bring the “charm of an English country club” to the River District next door to his Gemelle Restaurant and Hotel Otto micro-resort, according to an announcement from Love Management Inc.

Love bought the 70-year-old George’s Cash & Carry, 4424 White Settlement Road, in August and said he would plan a new concept.

Stewart’s, named for his late father, will seat 28 in a cozy indoor bar and offer a 15,000-square-foot croquet lawn, according to the announcement.

A light-bites menu will include such items as a lobster roll, shrimp cocktail, a croque monsieur, steak frites and a club sandwich.

Stewart’s will have the “timeless charm of an English country club,” according to the announcement.

“In keeping with croquet tradition,” the announcement said, “crisp ‘croquet whites’ jackets or sweaters are encouraged, though Stewart’s will happily offer these classic attire items to any guest who needs them, reinforcing its ethos as ‘a country club for the people.’ ”

George’s, one of Fort Worth’s first import grocers, had been closed several years since the deaths of founders George Gus and Helen Phiripes and a son, Nicholas Phiripes. The decor included a prominent photo of comedian Tina Fey, a family friend through grandparents in Philadelphia.

Stewart’s joins a Love Management empire that includes Lonesome Dove Western Bistro (Fort Worth, Austin, Knoxville), which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2025. Other properties are the Woodshed Smokehouse, Love Shack (Fort Worth and DFW Airport), Queenie’s Steakhouse in Denton, the White Elephant Saloon, Gemelle, Ático, Paloma Suerte, Caterina’s and Tannahill’s Tavern & Music Hall.

Love recently announced a partnership with Live Nation for Woodshed Smokehouse outlets at concert venues including the Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas.
