Where are the best tacos in Texas? Three are from Fort Worth-area restaurants
Fort Worth was already Texas’ No. 1 city for barbecue, and now, the area is also home to three top-50 restaurants for tacos.
Don Artemio Mexican Heritage in Fort Worth, Vaqueros Texas Bar-B-Que in Grapevine and Zavala’s Barbecue in Grand Prairie made the 50 “best” list in Texas Monthly magazine, even though none of the three is a traditional taqueria.
Don Artemio, open daily at 3268 W. Seventh St., is a high-end interior Mexico steakhouse, cabrito restaurant and tequila bar from Coahuila.
It made the top 50 for the tacos with nopalitos fritos — fried cactus strings with chopped bacon on heritage tortillas.
“Diners are offered tongs to pluck the crispy strings from a pyramid-shaped heap,” the magazine wrote, and “ ... the environs add a lot to the experience, giving a feel of northern Mexico.”
Vaqueros Texas Bar-B-Que, open Thursdays and weekends at 906 Jean St., Grapevine, made the list for Thursday “taco night” specials such as the Tlaquepaque, barbacoa with dark arbol.
Vaqueros also serves traditional barbecue meats and birria tacos.
Zavala’s Barbecue, 421 W. Main St., Grand Prairie, was already on the list of the “50 Best BBQ Joints” and doubled up by making the “best tacos” list.
Zavala’s made the list for its Sloppy Juan taco, a mixture of chopped brisket and pork. The restaurant’s morning coffee stand, Mas Coffee, 105 W. Main St., also serves a Sloppy Juan breakfast version with egg and cheese.
The top 10 tacos list includes the octopus taco at former Fort Worth restaurant Revolver Taco, 2646 Elm St., Dallas.
Maskaras Mexican Grill, 2423 W. Kiest Blvd., Dallas, is listed for its tacos ahogados.
The top 10 list is dominated by El Paso and Midland restaurants. It’s at texasmonthly.com.
