Eats Beat

Here’s a first-rate breakfast taco from a familiar restaurant south of Fort Worth

Del Norte Tacos is home again, and now old friends can find their way back.

For 16 years, the roadside cafe and country-music hangout has drawn crowds to the Johnson County town of Godley for brisket tacos, smoked chiles rellenos and sensational salsas.

Then Del Norte moved last fall to a larger music hall and bar next door.

Staffing was short, and service suffered. Customers wanted the cozy old restaurant back.

Now, Del Norte is back where it started in 2008, in an old gas station at 101 Texas 171.

The service and menu are still in a state of flux. At least, they were the other morning, when Del Norte’s front door was open for weekend breakfast but the restaurant seemed empty.

After a couple of minutes, a worker turned up to take an order for breakfast tacos. The paper menu is different from what’s in the system, she explained. The breakfast menu isn’t online at all.

But all was forgiven when the Tex-Mex taco arrived.

Folded in a large and meticulously griddled flour tortilla, it was filled with a choice of sausages, bacon or barbacoa, along with eggs, cheese, pico, sour cream and guacamole.

With Del Norte’s fiery salsa roja and even more inflammable habanero salsa, and first-rate complimentary charro beans, it was a sensational breakfast for $5. That’s no more than a loaded Whataburger taquito.

Del Norte serves breakfast at 8 a.m. Fridays through Sundays.

It’s also BYOB once again, meaning you don’t have to wait until 10 a.m. for a mimosa or a beer like in restaurants that sell liquor.

Brisket tacos used to be a big deal. Now, they’re everywhere.

But Del Norte also serves breakfast burritos doused with queso, red and green salsa; breakfast tortas or quesadillas; “breakfast nachos” with eggs and jalapenos; and menudo.

The regular menu still features brisket tacos, red or green rolled or stacked enchiladas and five salads.

Del Norte Tacos is 7 miles west of the Chisholm Trail Parkway, the easiest route for most patrons. There’s an exit for Godley or Joshua.

It’s open for lunch and dinner Mondays through Thursdays, breakfast through dinner Fridays through Sundays; 817-389-2451, delnortetacos.com.
