New breakfast tacos, including one on a ‘French toast tortilla’ in Grapevine
New-wave tacos have come to breakfast.
The Dallas-based Velvet Taco restaurant in Grapevine now opens at 8 a.m. to serve the company’s imaginative breakfast tacos.
The Fort Worth location does not open for breakfast yet. But the same breakfast tacos are served all day, so you can stop in for one after 11 a.m.
You’ve probably heard of Velvet Taco and its mondo bizarro tacos with fillings such as Korean fried rice, tikka chicken or Nashville hot tofu.
The Dallas restaurant has been around more than 10 years, and the Fort Worth location has been open nine years at 2700 W. Seventh St.
The Grapevine location, 440 Texas 114 West, is the only Tarrant County Velvet Taco that opens at 8 a.m.
A future north Fort Worth location is expected at 2828 North Tarrant Parkway.
Velvet Taco’s eccentric menu mainly serves small portions of various fillings and veggies on tortillas. They’re nothing like typical tacos.
The breakfast tacos include a bacon-egg-and-potato taco on a “French toast” tortilla ($3.95) or a brisket-bacon-pulled-pork-egg-and-potato taco ($4.75).
Don’t be frightened by the descriptions. They’re small. At 520-530 calories, you wouldn’t want them much larger.
Other breakfast tacos include sausage chicken and egg and brisket, potato and egg.
Velvet Taco is better known for late-night stops for its rotisserie chicken taco or Buffalo chicken taco, among a choice of 24 fillings.
The menu also offers chips, queso and corn, along with the restaurants’ signature red velvet cake.
The Grapevine location is open daily from breakfast through dinner; 817-527-5995.
For now, the Fort Worth location is open for lunch and dinner; 817-887-9810, velvettaco.com.
