That new fine dining restaurant is ready to open in the former Ballpark in Arlington

Hearsay steakhouse in Arlington opens

Hey, Bud! When was that restaurant in the old Ballpark opening?

—Fort Worth reader

Hearsay, a steakhouse and cigar bar from the owners of Mercury Chophouse Arlington, opens this weekend above Choctaw Stadium, the Texas Rangers’ former home at 1711 E. Randol Mill Road.

It’s serving dinner March 4 and brunch and dinner March 5, then regular hours afterward. Book reservations on OpenTable. (There’s plenty of parking, but on nearby game days you have to pay.)

Choctaw Stadium continues to evolve with new business openings including Spark Arlington, a coworking space, and Hearsay Arlington, a fine-dining restaurant and cigar patio.

New Camp Bowie restaurants thriving

Hey, Bud! First Fortuna closed on Camp Bowie Boulevard, then Edelweiss. Now The Original is moving to the north side. What’s going on? Did the owners of Fortuna ever open anywhere else?

—A west side man

Some workers from Fortuna moved to Italiano’s, 5442 River Oaks Blvd.

River Oaks is now home to lots of affordable restaurants like Grumps, River Oaks Cafe, Josefina’s, the locally owned Chuy’s and Casa Burger.

(Don’t feel sorry for Camp Bowie. JD’s Hamburgers and Fred’s Texas Cafe have huge crowds. Dayne’s sells out every day. Campisi’s is consistently busy. Fitzgerald’s is bustling, and Boozie’s and Old Texas Brewing are new.)

Chicken fra diavolo is listed on the menu as chicken “fried diablo” at Italiano’s.

Yes, El Torito was in Texas before

Hey, Bud! The story about Rio Mambo being sold said it would be the El Torito company’s expansion into Texas. But wasn’t it here before?

—Randy, Arlington

Yes, 40 years and a couple of owners ago, El Torito opened Cal-Mex restaurants in Dallas, Addison and Austin, among other locations.

They didn’t last, but manager Jim Baron went on to co-found the much better and Southwestern-flavored Blue Mesa Grill.

(The new owners don’t plan to change Rio Mambo, FYI.)
