Swiss Pastry Shop in Fort Worth is open after oven fire. Lost: 50 Black Forest cakes

Swiss Pastry Shop’s hottest seller got too hot

Hey, Bud! Is Swiss Pastry Shop OK? I saw the fire trucks were there.

—West Vickery Boulevard motorist

Yes, there was a fire call Tuesday night — Swiss Pastry’s hot-selling Black Forest cake just got too hot.

Some meringue smoldered in a bakery oven, Hans Muller wrote on Facebook.

Swiss Pastry opened Wednesday as usual to sell its popular gluten-free cakes, Fort Worth’s signature dessert. It’s open Tuesdays through Saturdays at 3936 W. Vickery Blvd.

(The cakes are really an almond dacquoise known as “Swedish Black Forest cake,” not the chocolate-and-cherry German style.)

Heaven’s Gate, Ol’ South, Skillet N’ Grill for Christmas

Hey, Bud! I’m 90, and my family just said they’re coming here for Christmas. I can’t possibly handle it all. Where do we go?

—”An Eats Beat reader for 30 years”

For the 38th year, this the place to find the big list of Christmas Sunday brunches. Watch here or next week at star-telegram.com/eatsbeat.

But for inexpensive home cooking, you’re limited to the Heaven’s Gate buffet, Ol’ South Pancake House in Fort Worth and Burleson, or Skillet N’ Grill in Arlington.

Cattlemen’s, Riscky’s Steakhouse serve calf fries

Hey, Bud! I saw where M & M Steak House is closed for good. Where do we go now for calf fries?

—Connoisseur

Cattlemen’s, which recently changed hands, serves calf fries and sometimes does calf-fry pizzas. In the 1920s, today’s Riscky’s Steakhouse was the first restaurant anywhere to sell calf fries on a menu. Back then, it was named Theo’s.
