One of Texas’ best barbecue restaurants opens a location on Fort Worth’s southside

Hurtado Barbecue, the craft-barbecue restaurant that brought fans to downtown Arlington, is open for limited service at its new Fort Worth location.

The new Hurtado, 1116 Eighth Ave., opens from 7 a.m. until late afternoon for now, serving breakfast and lunch daily in a familiar location near the hospital district.

The location was formerly home to another craft barbecue restaurant, Derek Allan’s. Hurtado had said he would reopen the restaurant quickly after taking over July 12.

Hurtado’s location reopened in a quick turnaround without many changes from Derek Allan’s.

The newest restaurant is Hurtado’s third, joining locations in Arlington and Little Elm.

In Fort Worth, it competes head-to-head in the same southside market with Panther City BBQ, a Texas Monthly top 10 now open in its new enclosed dining room; Heim Barbecue, the trailblazer in a city now ranked No. 1 in Texas for barbecue; and Smoke-A-Holics BBQ, a Texas Monthly Top 50 restaurant also known for rib tips and collards.

Hurtado draws lines for his brisket and beef ribs, along with house-made poblano sausage, “Mexicue” birria tacos, smoked elotes and tortillas.

Hurtado started in 2018 as a pop-up serving brisket tacos, then opened in Arlington at 205 E. Front St., in February 2020. Coincidentally, it was the same day that Goldee’s Barbecue, ranked No. 1 in the state by Texas Monthly, opened near Kennedale.

The new Hurtado will be open for breakfast and lunch daily except Mondays; hurtadobbq.com.
