Why was that barbecue or burger restaurant in Fort Worth closed? Here’s the answer

Fred’s on a 5-day week; Goldee’s reopens June 17

Hey, Bud! We drove all the way to eat at [several different restaurants] and it was closed. Why don’t they warn us?

—West Texas

Many restaurants are either taking extra days off for rest, or remodeling. The new Fred’s Texas Cafe cut service to five days a week, Tuesday-Saturday, due to crowds and lack of staff. State No. 1-ranked Goldee’s Barbecue near Kennedale took a break and will reopen June 17. H3 Ranch is remodeling through July.

My advice: Check each Facebook page, check Instagram and maybe call, although restaurant owners are also too busy to update social media or take calls.

If the guacamole didn’t look right, here’s why

Hey, Bud! We recently ate at [restaurant]. Everything was wonderful except for the guacamole. It was very pale and lacked flavor. Are they adding water?

Avocados are both expensive and inconsistent right now, and sometimes they’re not available at all. When you order something in a restaurant and it’s not like usual, it’s probably because the restaurant can’t get its regular supply. Please understand that although dining crowds are back to normal, restaurants are not.

Steel City Pops hanging on in Waterside

Hey, Bud! I’m frustrated with Steel City Pops. Got hooked and now they aren’t always open and only have three varieties. Why?

—Popsicle fan

Steel City Pops’ Fort Worth store, 5924 Convair Drive, is the company’s last outside its hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Selling pop bars didn’t make enough money to pay rents in shopping centers nationwide, and then business melted down during the pandemic.
