$10 pizzas, a habanero-honey special and old-time buffets for National Pizza Day
Wednesday is National Pizza Day — as if every day isn’t Pizza Day.
Here’s a look at some new local pizza restaurants and old favorites:
▪ Mama’s Pizza, for 54 years the gold standard for local pizzerias, now offers an excellent thin crust and also a cauliflower crust.
The weekday lunch buffet is still a regular stop for thousands across Fort Worth. Mama’s has nine locations scattered from North Richland Hills to Granbury.
Mama’s delivers specials to one of the city’s largest text-message subscription lists (text “Mamas” to 21333). Today’s subscriber special is a large regular or thin crust with two toppings for $13; mamaspizzas.net.
▪ Fireside Pies, a holdout on Crockett Row, is offering $10 pizzas all day.
Fireside is one of the first local wood-fired oven pizzerias and also offers salads and pastas; 2949 Crockett St., 817-769-3590, or 1285 S. Main St. in Grapevine, 817-416-1285, firesidepies.com.
▪ Parton’s Pizza is the old-school favorite serving pizza the way it used to be — crisp and all-you-can-eat.
It’s like the pizza buffets of childhood, with lots of toppings and a cracker crust.
For 55 years, the Partons have served old-time pizzas in a traditional pizza “parlor” with red-and-white checked tablecloths, red vinyl booths, red chairs with heart-shaped backs, plenty of pepperoni and a serve-yourself salad bar with various day-glo colors of dressing.
Parton’s is open for lunch and dinner daily. It’s at 2813 S. Cherry Lane south of Interstate 30; 817-244-5152, facebook.com/partonspizza.
▪ Pizza Verde is the most talked-about new pizza restaurant, serving all-plant-based pizzas on a choice of a regular or cauliflower crust.
Plant-based pepperoni or mozzarella might not suit everybody, but they’re easier to gobble down, and the cauliflower crust is a hit.
It’s open nights and all day Friday and Saturday at 5716 Locke Ave., 817-349-9852, pizzaverdetx.com.
▪ Zoli’s Pizza is the most heralded pizza restaurant, winning the Caputo Cup pizza contest in Las Vegas and the title of “America’s best pan pizza.”
The winner was the “dope” hot soppressata salami pizza with ricotta and a spicy marmalade.
But there’s almost no way to go wrong at this restaurant from owner Jay Jerrier, owner of Cane Rosso, a past national independent pizzeria of the year.
For Pizza Day, the signature hot soppressata-habanero-honey pizzas are $12.
Go by Zoli’s for a pizza, spaghetti, a burger or the “west side” jalapeno-pepperoni waffle cheese fries.
Zoli’s is open for lunch and dinner daily; Hulen Street at Houghton Avenue, 817-402-0050, zolispizza.com/fort-worth.
▪ Corporate cousin Cane Rosso is also offering the hot soppressata-habanero-honey pizza for $12.
Cane Rosso is open for lunch and dinner daily at 815 W. Magnolia Ave., 817-922-9222, or at 200 N. East St., Arlington, 817-533-3120, canerosso.com
