Hey, Bud! Did you know the Luby’s in Bridgewood closed?

—Readers aching for a LuAnn Platter

As reported here in June, Luby’s hasn’t been able to sell most locations, so three of the four area cafeterias are closed or shutting down soon. The Forest Hill location is the only local Luby’s staying open. Texans have loved Luby’s food for most of a century, but so far nobody has come forward to buy the other locations.

Hey, Bud! Have you ever been to the Healthy Hippie Cafe in Watauga?

—Caller a couple of weeks ago

No, and it’s too late. The plant-based Hippie cafe and bar closed Aug. 23. Darrell and Kelli Myatt plan to reopen it in another location, Kelli Myatt wrote by email. After five years, she wrote, “We saw promising growth in our business but realized we were spinning our wheels..”

Hey, Bud! Where can we stop on the way to Marfa and back?

—Question from the other car seat on our way to a weekend in the Davis Mountains

The must-try is Perini Ranch Steakhouse 15 miles south of Abilene. It’s open for dinner nightly except Mondays and for lunch Fridays through Sundays. Then proceed through San Angelo. For another choice, stop in Coleman at either Black Cur Steak or adjacent Rancho Pizzeria.

If you go through Midland, Odessa or San Angelo, all three cities have Cork & Pig Taverns. Wall Street Bar & Grill in Midland is a cousin to Mac’s here. Mamasita’s in Odessa is a good little famly-run cafe.
