Eats Beat

A simple Haltom City cafe near Fort Worth for takeout lunches or breakfast biscuits

If you go out, be careful

Hey, Bud! Is there a little place where senior citizens can eat off by themselves? Just to get a little something like potato soup or tomato-basil. Something besides a Golden Corral.

—Sweet caller from Hurst

It’s not safe for anyone older than 65 to eat out right now, especially not indoors. But it’s just as good to get takeout from good lunch cafes like Bluebonnet Cafe, 2223 Haltom Road. If you go out, whether it’s to a restaurant, store or church, stay away from absolutely anyone else. Wear a mask anytime someone is near. (By the way, Bluebonnet is now open Sundays, for those first-rate breakfast biscuits or lunches.)

McKinley’s might be back

Hey, Bud! Is there something we can do to keep McKinley’s Bakery & Cafe in business? So many people are sad they are closing.

—Carolyn, Fort Worth

Breakfast-lunch cafes can’t really afford to stay in swanky shopping centers. Owner Stacey Rumfelt hinted that McKinley’s might be back elsewhere next year. Till then, go help other iconic local restaurants like Blue Bonnet Bakery, Carshon’s Deli and Swiss Pastry Shop.

35 years of Eats Beat

Hey, Bud! A little positivity would do you well. Glass half full, Bud!

—Ryan, Fort Worth

Been mostly positive in 35 years in this space, since June 14, 1985. (The first Eats Beat was about huevos rancheros, including those in the little local Chuy’s Mexican Restaurants.) I’ll just say that regardless whether your glass is half full or empty, it will not protect you from coronavirus.
