What’s the best restaurant for takeout? (And when is that chicken place reopening?)
Some winners after eight weeks of take-out
Hey, Bud! Which are the really good takeout restaurants?
—William, Fort Worth
My best so far: 1. Righteous Foods chicken, beef or combo fajitas and guacamole. (And the takeout Mother’s Day quiche brunch.) 2. Everything from Local Foods Kitchen. 3. The Easter lamb dinner from the Del Frisco’s Grille chain. Honorable mention to Bonnell’s Fine Texas Cuisine’s smoked turkey with excellent house barbecue sauce, and Paris 7th/Saint-Émilion coq au vin.
Return of the fried chicken favorite
Hey, Bud! Is Drew’s going to reopen? We need fried chicken.
—Amber, Fort Worth
Drew’s Place, 5701 Curzon Ave., is known for some of the city’s best fried chicken. smothered pork chops and homestyle cooking. “Drew” Thomas’ restaurant will reopen May 19 for takeout only. (Dining room later.)
Memories of cheeseburgers and margaritas
Hey, Bud! I saw Hoffbrau is closed. Wasn’t that Ninfa’s?
—Evelyn, Fort Worth
Hey, Bud! I saw Hoffbrau is closed. Wasn’t that Carlson’s?
—Jack, Fort Worth via facebook.com/eatsbeat
Close, but no. Depending when you grew up, your best memory of South University Drive may be the Carlson’s Drive-Inn “bakon-burgers,” a much-missed hickory-bacon cheeseburger, or Ninfa’s, the Houston-based chain that popularized tacos al carbon before we knew about fajitas. Both were on the site of today’s Staples chain office supply. The Hoffbrau Steak & Grill House was in the next block south in the now-gone 1849 Village. (Hoffbrau remains open in Benbrook, Granbury and Haltom City.)
