With no hockey or ice, the Zamboni delivers your pizza in this city near Fort Worth
ZuRoma Bar & Grill couldn’t be as good as the old days, could it?
It’s pretty darn close.
The Sicilian-style pizzeria in a youth hockey rink has everything going against it. It’s fighting for take-out and family-style business. There are newer and flashier pizzerias.
And did I mention it’s in a youth hockey rink?
Yet like an old skater on a breakaway rush, ZuRoma still has flashes of the brilliance it showed when NYTEX Sports Centre opened 20 years ago.
If ZuRoma can’t sell with rectangular, Sicilian-style pizzas, it sells with show. The restaurant makes nearby deliveries with the Zamboni ice-surfacing machine.
On a recent Saturday, a pepperoni-jalapeno-and-mushroom pizza (about $11-$16) was as good as at comparable Campisi’s or i Fratelli.
ZuRoma was started by a distant Campisi family member, and in the same way, the pizzas, garlic and cheese bread are similar but a couple of generations removed.
To cope with the coronavirus slowdown, the Trazzera family has added online ordering and several delivery services.
Best of all, ZuRoma has added daily specials such as pizza discounts, $4.99 Saturday burger baskets and buy-one-get-one pastas or pizzas some days.
A family dinner of chicken fettuccine Alfredo ($39.99) feeds five people, or choose ravioli or spaghetti with ZuRoma’s thick marinara.
Garlic bread is $4.99. Add it.
Besides the basic pizzas and pastas, ZuRoma features a giant chicken parmesan sandwich with pasta ($13.99), chicken piccata, chicken marsala and a choice of stromboli ($8.99).
The menu also offers house and Caesar salads and a Mediterranean shrimp or chicken salad.
ZuRoma is open for lunch and dinner weekdays, dinner weekends in the west end of NYTEX Sports Centre, 8851 Ice House Drive; 817-520-3344, http://zuromas.com/contact/.
