Eats Beat

Here’s a $5 enchilada special that’s easy on both your wallet and your waistline

OK, so you went on a New Year’s diet — but that Valentine’s candy was tempting, and ...

Fear not. Blue Zones Restaurant Week is here through Sunday, offering good deals on plant-based dinners and healthy dining that’s actually pretty good.

For example, who knew you could eat a healthy $5 enchilada special?

The “Veggie Blues” enchilada plate includes squash-and-mushroom enchiladas verdes, mixed vegetables and black beans for $5 this week at the Los Vaqueros Stockyards restaurant.

Los Vaqueros is a 40-year Fort Worth favorite known for Tex-Mex fajitas, Sunday brunch and “old fashioned” enchiladas served in an old-time chili gravy.

But the Cisneros family’s restaurants also lead Fort Worth and Texas in serving heart-healthy veggie, spinach or avocado enchiladas, or pecan-squash-stuffed chiles rellenos.

For tourist families or springtime parties on the Stockyards restaurant’s garden patio, Los Vaqueros is a welcome way to dine on Tex-Mex without the guilt.

(The first step to reduce guilt in any Tex-Mex restaurant, ask for soft corn tortillas instead of chips.)

The flagship location is in the Stockyards, 2629 N. Main St., 817-624-1511. There’s also a Parker County location at 29 Crown Road, Willow Park, 817-441-2300, losvaqueros.com

Also on special for Blue Zones Restaurant Week:

Probably the biggest deal of all: 20% off at Zoës Kitchen’s locations at 1601 S. University Drive (WestBend) or 5917 Convair Drive (Waterside).

Any veggie curry is 20% off at three excellent Thai restaurants from the Thanpaisarnsamut family: Spice, 411 W. Magnolia Ave.; Thai Select, 4630 SW Loop 820; and The Bangkok, 3529 Heritage Trace Parkway. (And that’s great curry.)

The beautiful Cafe Modern, 3200 Darnell St., offers 10% off its popular beet-veggie burger ($12 platter), salads including the Waldorf or miso soup.

Buffalo West, 7101 Camp Bowie Blvd. West, is one of the few steakhouses with an old-time soup-and-salad bar. It’s serving a burger-like grilled portobello mushroom platter with sweet potato and asparagus for $12.

Many other restaurants are offering specials on salads or grain bowls.
