A new little taqueria in southwest Fort Worth promises Grandma’s cooking
A homespun little Mexican cafe has opened off Granbury Road, and let me explain what that means.
For years, Wedgwood patrons have mostly had to cross Interstate 20 to Seminary Drive for the taqueria experience.
Now, La Casa de Lina at 5216 Wedgmont Circle North serves up simple, homestyle Mexican breakfasts, tacos, quesadillas and platters, plus posole and menudo on weekends.
It’s not fancy. And it’s not even as big as some of the taquerias on Seminary or Hemphill Street.
But for a simple Mexican breakfast or lunch platter, La Casa de Lina is off to a good start.
A chilaquiles verdes breakfast this week ($7.95, or $10.95 with egg, fruit and coffee or juice) was made the traditional way — tortillas and salsa — with fresh, flavorful rice and refried beans.
La Casa de Lina has handmade tamales, both pork and an excellent chicken-and-green-salsa flavor ($1.50 each, $14/dozen).
If you missed your Christmas tamales, try La Casa de Lina’s chicken.
I didn’t go back at lunch, but the neighbors recommend the street tacos ($1.75).
(Don’t expect Tex-Mex beef enchiladas in chili. You’ll have to wait for Mi Charrito Rey to reopen.)
Along with horchata and aguas frescas, La Casa de Lina also offers atole and café de olla, which you don’t see everywhere.
Desserts included one of the richest, best flan recipes in a small cafe ($2.95) along with gelatin or strawberries with cream.
All the recipes are billed as “Grandma Lina’s.”
This is one place where I believe it.
I’m not saying make a special trip across town, but it’s a nice little cafe for Wedgwood.
La Casa de Lina is open for breakfast through dinner. It’s a half-block south of Granbury Road near Wheaton Drive, in a small strip shopping center facing Wedgwood Village.
The phone number is 682-499-5884 (it’s wrong online and on take-out menus); facebook.com/lacasadelina.
