There’s a new Tex-Mex restaurant in Fort Worth near TCU

It took Blue Goose Cantina 35 years to get to Fort Worth, but the Dallas Tex-Mex legend picked the right spot.

The newest Blue Goose is in an anchor spot in University Park Village, where Blue Mesa Grill fed TCU parents, students and fans for 20 years before moving near Montgomery Plaza.

The TCU neighborhood has always begged for a Tex-Mex restaurant. Ninfa’s came and went. Pappasito’s high prices wore thin. Los Vaqueros has a location and Enchiladas Ole is coming, but they’re small local places.

Blue Goose is big enough to have two parties going at the same time and still have plenty of room for other customers to hit the fajitas, nachos and margaritas they know from Greenville Avenue.

On a trip this week, Blue Goose was already on top of its game, The lunch fajita nachos ($8, weekdays till 4 p.m.) came with big scoops of peppery guacamole and pico de gallo, not little spoonfuls.

The chips and salsa can go head-to-head with Pappasito’s or Uncle Julio’s. And the chicken-cheese-stuffed jalapenos (“Goose eggs”) were a family-sized appetizer.

The time to go is a weekday afternoon, when combination plates are $9-$11 and there’s a good fajita salad ($11) or tortilla soup-salad combo ($9).

Brunch starts at 10 a.m. weekends, featuring chilaquiles verdes ($11), fajita-egg tacos ($11) and a breakfast quesadilla or breakfast egg-BLT sandwich.

The dinner menu features the expected fajitas ($18-$21) and combination dinners ($12-$14) but also beef-like tacos with “Impossible” plant-based taco meat

If you’ve never tried Blue Goose, go during the holidays. It’ll be busy when college is back in session and for many football Saturdays thereafter.

Blue Goose is open for lunch or brunch and dinner daily at 1612 S. University Drive, 817-386-5433, bluegoosecantina.com.
