When all else fails, there’s always Clown Burger. The iconic burger stand turns 60

You can’t keep a good Clown down.

At risk of closure and punished for looking its age, the beloved Clown Burger turns 60 Saturday with a special reason to celebrate.

Never franchised, always original, Clown Burger guarantees that the burgers served today at 5010 Stanley Keller Road are absolutely the same as the day it opened in 1959 on East Belknap Street.

But Kari Louthan’s takeover from her father, Bill, has been rocky.

She’s turned the corner now, and the Clown is ready to celebrate beginning at noon Saturday with 60-cent hamburgers, $1 fries and the return of family members who worked at the original location.

“This has not been a smooth transition, but we’re looking forward to 2020,” she said.

It is almost amazing to think that a burger grill that opened in 1959 is still operating the same way today.

Louthan has added grilled jalapenos, a great addition.

The burgers are made with old-time 1/6-pound patties, so a normal order is a double or triple cheeseburger.

There’s also foot-long chili dogs that taste they way they did in 1959.

Before McDonald’s, Jack-in-the-Box and Griff’s Burger Bar brought new clowns to town, Haltom City went to the original Clown on Belknap.

That sign stands today on Haltom Road. Louthan had been in a flap with the city over repainting her outside sign along with the iconic Clown.
