Eats Beat

Bud’s 3 best: ‘Eats Beat’ sizes up the top burgers, BBQ, chicken-fried

Hey, Bud! What are your three best burgers these days?

—Burger Battle voter

Toughest of all. Lately, the three best have been at 407BBQ in Argyle, Heim Barbecue in Fort Worth and Big Daddy’s Ship Store on Lake Grapevine. The new Rogers RoundHouse burger in Fort Worth is solid (definitely order the tots). I’m anxious to get out to Ben’s Triple B near Wesleyan and to Knife Burger on Crockett Row, and the best burgers of all-time are at Fred’s Texas Cafe. (For a bison burger, Roy Pope Grocery.)

Hey, Bud! What are your three best barbecue restaurants these days?

—Glenn, Burleson

Right now? Flores Barbecue at Clearfork, Heim Barbecue in Fort Worth, and either BBQ on the Brazos in Cresson or Smiley’s in Ponder. Panther City BBQ is good, too. Derak Allan’s Texas Barbecue just opened in Fort Worth, and look for more to open soon.

Hey, Bud! What are your three best chicken-fried steaks these days?

—Somebody every week

Mary’s Cafe in Strawn, Billy’s Oak Acres BBQ in Fort Worth, Star Cafe in Fort Worth. With an honorable mention to Ranchman’s Cafe in Ponder, Babe’s Chicken Dinner House and Seven Mile Cafe in Fort Worth, Keller and Denton.
