Never before has one Texas restaurant served burgers, gyros, pastrami, carne asada and breakfast.

But then, never before has Texas had an Everest Burgers.

The new California-based fast-food restaurant on West Southlake Boulevard at Davis Boulevard is remarkable. It’s like an East Coast-style deli and diner gone San Fernando Valley, serving the Bicos family’s chili-cheese burritos or pancakes in the morning and pastrami sandwiches, fish tacos or Greek gyros with tzatziki at night.

Best of all: Everest serves charbroiler burgers. That’s a rarity in Texas, and particularly in north Tarrant County.

The broiler gives Everest’s burgers a cookout flavor. Matched with the typical California toppings — shredded lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and Thousand Island “special sauce” — they’re an American classic. (Sure, you can have mustard.)

The regular burger is one-third of a pound ($4.49). Definitely add the hand-breaded onion rings ($3.69).

There’s also a junior burger ($2.99), and for more broiler flavor order the junior double cheeseburger ($4.19) — that’s like an early-day Big Boy or Big Mac.

(Yes, broiler burgers have less fat than grilled burgers. Everest also offers a turkey burger.)

Past the burgers, Everest offers a long menu of deli sandwiches featuring shaved pastrami ($8.79), turkey, patty melts and a grilled cheese ($3.59). The menu also includes foot-long Hebrew National hot dogs ($3.69, or $4.79 with the slightly sweet deli-style chili).

The Bicos family expanded Everest Burgers here from locations in Glendale, La Crescenta, Santa Clarita and Upland, California. This is the first Texas location.

It’s open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner; 2325 W. Southlake Blvd., 682-223-2333, everestburgers.com.
