Fort Worth’s home of the Black Forest cake got a minor facelift. See what’s new

Loyal customers kept Swiss Pastry Shop full and busy the morning of Wednesday, July 15, a day after the bakery reopened.

For about a week, the 53-year-old Fort Worth bakery closed to reconfigure its front displays and give the space a “glow up.”

An employee working Wednesday morning told the Star-Telegram what mainly changed was rearranging the bakery display cases to make the front room more expansive and visible.

The dining area is still full of tables and chairs, which served the full lunch menu that Swiss Pastry Shop once had and stopped five years ago during Covid. Now the dining space is used for those who pick up a coffee and treat as the business is now entirely dedicated to baking.

Their sparkling glass cases were full of heaping cream puffs, vivid cupcakes and caramel colored pastries. The black forest cake was not out on display because it is held in the back refrigerated area. If you want one, all you have to do is ask.

At the end of 2022, Swiss Pastry Shop’s Black Forest cake went viral on TikTok after a Fort Worth resident made a video reminiscing on her childhood birthday “crunchy cake.”

After six million views and 1.4 million likes, the bakery was selling a Black Forest cake every 12 minutes, according to previous Star-Telegram reporting.

The infamous cake is unlike your normal German chocolate and cherry liqueur black forest cake. Instead, Swiss Pastry Shop makes a flourless almond meringue layered with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Shortly after the bakery went viral, Swiss Pastry Shop updated their storefront sign from just reading “breakfast, lunch, dessert and espresso” to “Home of Fort Worth’s Black Forest” for their 50th anniversary. They also put in a larger oven to accommodate “even more Black Forest.”

In a challenging dining scene, it’s nice to see one of Fort Worth’s longstanding institutions still thriving.

“I’m happy they got a glow up, but they could throw those pastries at me across the parking lot and I would pick them up, dust them off, and be happy as can be,” said a Fort Worth Foodie member on a reopening announcement post.

Current owner Hans Peter Muller, son of the shop’s original owner, is still running the shop at 3936 W. Vickery Blvd. in Fort Worth. To place an order you can visit in person, open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, or call them at (817) 732-5661.
