Family behind Fort Worth’s Michelin-recognized taquería opens sister concept

The Cortez family behind the only Michelin-recommended taqueria in Fort Worth has officially opened their seafood restaurant.

The ribbon was cut for Mariscos Cortez at 1151 Martin Luther King Freeway on Sunday, July 12, which happens to be just across the street from their sister restaurant, Birrieria y Taqueria Cortez.

Birrieria y Taqueria Cortez opened in 2020 and has been recognized every year by anonymous Texas Michelin judges since the guide began in 2024. They are known for their family birria recipe in the form of quesa-tacos, birrira-pizzas and flautas.

Mariscos Cortez is a seafood restaurant with flavors from the coast of Mexico that will serve a small menu of ceviche, aguachiles and Jalisco-style shrimp boils.

“We opened Mariscos to bring a different flavor of traditional Mexican seafood and share more family recipes to the community,” owner Rogelio Cortez Jr. told the Star Telegram. “But another Michelin recognition is certainly a goal we would love to reach.”

What’s on the menu at Mariscos Cortez?

The menu at Mariscos is small but mighty. That’s one of the reasons the Cortez’ taqueria was so successful: they don’t offer a wide variety, but what they do offer is done really well.

A lot of what Mariscos offers is different variations of ceviche. There’s both shrimp and tilapia options with different sauces like their spicy sauce or creamy avocado, all served with crispy toastadas.

But also, Mariscos has non-raw items. There are grilled or sautéed shrimp dishes, a crispy tilapia served with potato chips, and of course, their shrimp boil with corn, potatoes and sausage in a garlic butter or spicy sauce.

As for tacos, many who visited the soft opening raved about the Birria Taco De Camaron, which is shrimp marinated in the signature Cortez birria sauce. There was also some chatter about the snow crab cluster which comes as a side for $11.

Like Birrieria y Taqueria Cortez, Mariscos also serves agua frescas and margaritas.
