Weatherford restaurant closed by state agents over unpaid sales taxes

Wanda’s Restaurant, a home-cooking landmark on Fort Worth Highway for 38 years, is closed after state comptroller’s agents seized it Friday for unpaid taxes.

Wanda’s owed the state $33,953 in unpaid sales taxes and its permit was revoked in December, a spokesman for the comptroller’s office said.

According to the Weatherford Democrat, Wanda’s was founded by the late Wanda Ogle, who died June 21.

Wanda’s made news in 2014 for going smoke-free. Ogle was a two-time cancer survivor.

It was one of the older plate-lunch and chicken-fried steak cafes in Weatherford. It drew packed crowds for years until new competitors such as R & K Cafe and Downtown Cafe opened.

A Yelp reviewer wrote online: “Do you like to be called ‘hun’ or ‘sugar’? If so, this is your place.”

It was once a candidate for a past Star-Telegram list of the “best chicken-fried steaks.”

A menu posted online offered $9.25 lunches.

The bottom two lines: “****GOD BLESS AMERICA & VETS**** — ASK YOUR SERVER ABOUT PIES & CAKES.”

Texas businesses are responsible for collecting and reporting sales tax both to their customers on receipts and to the state comptroller’s office.

Dalton’s Corner in Burleson was also closed Friday by agents. Last month, Corky’s Corner in Benbrook was closed.
