This iconic burger joint in Arlington is moving to a new location after 31 years

After 31 years, one of Arlington’s most iconic burger joints is moving.

But don’t worry, it’s only moving four miles away.

The beloved Al’s Hamburgers announced Tuesday that it was moving into Fielder Plaza on West Randol Mill and North Fielder roads. It will be leasing 4,464 square feet of space in the shopping center anchored by Tom Thumb.

Al’s Hamburgers first opened in 1957 by Al Matthews, and has established itself since as one of Arlington’s most iconic restaurants. In 1989 the restaurant moved into its current location, in the corner space of the shopping strip on Northeast Green Oaks Boulevard. After Matthews retired, his daughter Melody Lawrence took over the restaurant with her husband Gary Lawrence.

“We are so excited, and we can’t wait to get settled into our new home,” said co-owner Melody Lawrence, in a news release.

Fielder Plaza, which is managed by Weitzman, first opened in 1978 and underwent major renovations last year.

Al’s Burgers will continue to operate out of its location on Green Oaks until its new location is ready to open in the spring.
