The ultimate short name list for your soon-to-be baby
As many of you know, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has been recording and maintaining baby name data for more than 140 years, dating back to 1880.
With that data, the SSA releases an annual list of the most commonly used baby names for that year.
And four-letter names seem to be among the most popular names in the US today.
Liam, Noah, Levi, Jack, Ezra, and Owen were all ranked inside the top 20 for boy names, while Emma, Luna, and Lilly ranked inside the top 20 for girl names.
If that’s the type of name you’re looking for, then you’ll appreciate our extensive short name list below!
Most popular three-letter baby names for girls
Looking at the past 100 years of SSA data, only two three-letter girl names rank inside the top 100 most common baby names since 1924.
Those names are Amy, which ranked No. 31, and Ann, coming in at No. 78.
If we were to narrow that data down to just 2023, we’d find a total of 26 girl names inside the top 1,000 most common names last year—representing less than 3% of that list.
And of those 26 girl names on our short name list, only two of them rank inside the top 10 and only four of them rank inside the top 100.
With that said, here’s our ultimate short name list for three-letter girl names in the US.

Don’t forget about two-letter names for babies!
We’ve already gone short with the three-letter names, so we may as well go one step shorter with our short name list.
But as you’ll come to notice, the shorter the names get, the more rare they become.
In 2023, only two two-letter names cracked the SSA’s list of 1,000 most popular baby names, and they were both found on the boy’s side.
Those names were Bo, which ranked No. 478, and Ty, which came in at No. 772.
Other popular two-letter names for boys or girls include Cy, like the legendary baseball pitcher Cy Young, and Io, like the Argive princess and Naiad-nymph who was loved by the god Zeus in Greek mythology.
Lu, Zy, Ky, Zo, Su, Li, Ry, and Mo are a little more rare, while Al (like Al Roker or Al Pacino) and Oz (like Dr. Oz) are a little more common.
We also love the name Ra, which is the Egyptian god of the sun, light, warmth, and growth. A popular example of that name in action is NFL wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
While two-letter names aren’t that common these days, they make for a unique name when chosen and also make excellent middle names or two-name first names—so make sure you don’t overlook them!
Did our short name list have what you were looking for?
While two-letter and three-letter names aren’t as popular as four-letter-or-longer names, that’s not to say there isn’t a market for them.
In fact, thousands of American babies—and thousands of more around the world—will be given a short name this year. The real question is whether or not your child will be one of them.
All in all, we hope our short name list above gave you some good ideas for your child’s name—or, at the very least, convinced you to stay far away from short names in the future.
