Upon arrival at the Abaton, I was struck by the emphasis on water. The Aegean Sea sparkles a deep azure blue along the property's 400 meters of beaches, and nearly half of the property's 152 expansive suites include personal swimming pools on private patios. Many overlook the sea, giving them an infinite feel.

  • Cool, Calm Vibes: My own suite instilled an instant sense of relaxation. Crisp white linens topped the plush bed, the floor sported marble tiles, and a deep tub was the perfect place to soak away the salt after a day of sunning and swimming.
  • Let the Light In: The resort's open window-filled spaces gave a further sense of connection with the sea. I never felt cooped up with all those gorgeous views!
  • Island Surroundings: I occasionally caught lovely, aromatic whiffs of jasmine and rosemary, thanks to the property's lush Med-style landscaping. Outdoor spaces also share the crisp Boho-Med aesthetic.

SheBuysTravel Tip:There are 14 different suite types available for guests, ranging in size, amenities and resort location. Make sure to explore all options before you book!

Rejuvenation starts in your Abaton suite. I loved the upscale Elemis toiletries, especially the loofah scrubber mitts that gave my skin an extra glow each day.

  • A True Wellness Connection: The emphasis on wellness continues across the resort with seaside yoga sessions, a state of the art gym and tennis courts for those who want to get their game on. There are even e-bikes available if you'd like to cruise into the nearby towns of Stalida or Malia.
  • Mandatory Spa Stop: The crown jewel of the resort's commitment to the mind-body-spirit connection is its tranquil spa, Anapnoe. It's named for the Greek word anapoi, which means "to breathe." Trust me: you'll breathe a lot easier after a stop here.
  • A Focus on You: A whole host of body and face treatments are on the menu, incorporating both Elemis and Augustinus Bader skincare solutions. I loved the deep tissue massage, easily one of the best I've ever had.
  • Romantic Spa Connections: Anapnoe also offers couples relaxation rituals. These packages are designed just for two, and afterwards you and your love can chill in the couple's spa suite.

In and On the Water

The sea takes center stage at the Abaton, for good reason. You'll spend a lot of time in and on the water here, and there are many opportunities to do so. There are four separate beaches with plenty of sun chaises and umbrellas to go around for guests.

  • The Sea is Dreamy: Water visibility and temperature off the Abaton is excellent for swimmers of all abilities. While quite saline, it's so pleasant and well-worth a dip or two.
  • A World Underwater: It's also a great place to snorkel. I took my gear and spied several colorful fish just off the cove. The resort worked with a marine biologist to develop what it calls "Abaton Seascapes," a map of three self-guided snorkel tours. It was fun to follow them and keep an eye out for Crete's underwater friends.
  • Luxe Cruises Available: If you're looking for a posh experience on the water, book a cruise on Abaton's Riva Iseo. The luxury 27-foot yacht is available for sunset champagne cruises or longer excursions. Unfortunately, high winds prevented me from going aboard. Next time!

SheBuysTravel Tip:While beautiful, the Aegean Sea can kick up tall waves quickly. Mind the flags at the beach. If they are red, do not enter the water. Stay safe and stick to the pools instead.

Speaking of the pools, the Abaton has some of the best I've seen. Here's what you need to know about the options available to all guests:

  • Two Pool Options: The first is a massive outdoor oasis facing the Aegean Sea dotted with palm trees. There's also a smaller but heated indoor pool adjacent to the gym. Both are kept in pristine condition, with cleanings several times a day.
  • Patio Bites: Guests lounging outside can easily enjoy Asian-inspired bites and drink service from the adjacent Buddha Bar as it provides butler service.
  • Plan Ahead: While I never saw a shortage of chairs or cabanas during my stay, if you want to spend a full day poolside it never hurts to get out there early to stake out your spot.

A Foodie's Fever Dream

Crete's influence is evident and easily tasted at the Abaton's five restaurants. The executive culinary staff is Cretan, and takes great pride in bringing the island's food to the resort's guests.

  • F-zin Ivy League: Each morning, the resort's main restaurant serves up a huge Greek breakfast buffet. I especially loved the local honey, yogurt, cheese, salads and house-made pastries. Dinner is served nightly here as well.
  • WOW Steak House: If you're in the mood for heartier fare, head to WOW. The restaurant sources its beef from the island, and their steaks are melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I loved the beef tartar with local Cretan bread, too.
  • Bony Fish: As its name suggests, Abaton's seafood eatery embraces maritime ingredients with a fusion flair. Sea bass sashimi shines here, as does the creamy smoked eel risotto. Whole flounder is flash-fried for juiciness, then the batter is removed before deboning.
  • Elemes: Hands down, my resort favorite. This little spot right on the beach feels like an authentic Cretan taverna, and the food follows suit. The salad loaded with creamy feta, local olives, tomatoes, beans and onions provided a simple but elegant way to begin dinner. I was urged to eat my slow-roasted lamb ribs "like a local" with my fingers, and the accompanying fermented goat milk risotto was incredible. Suffice to say, you're not going to go hungry while staying at Abaton!

SheBuysTravel Tip:Room service is also available 24-7 at the Abaton, should you prefer breakfast in bed or have a case of late-night munchies.

Elevated, Local Bar Service

Of course, you''ll want a decent drink to sip during those long, sunny afternoons on the sea or poolside. Abaton's beverage service does not disappoint.

  • Wine Time: Greece is renowned for its ancient winemaking tradition. Abaton guests can sample some of the best island vintages at weekly tastings. During my session, the resort's sommelier poured six bottles including whites, reds and a rose. These wines included those made with Liatiko, Kotsifali and Vidiano grapes, which ranged from crisp and herby to hefty and bold. They were perfect complements to the incredible locally-inspired food.
  • Crafted Cocktails: The wine is divine, but also make sure to pop into the lobby bar, Ladies and Gentlemen. The bar embraces local flavor using house-made botanical infusions and locally-produced mixers. Cretan Bliss is comprised of marjoram, thyme, cardamom, citrus and the local spirit raki and delicious, while the Melon Smash combines Cretan peponi melon, basil, gin and cucumber for another chic pre or post-dinner sip.
  • No Booze, No Problem: Hand-crafted herbally infused sparking lemonades and teas are also available for guests who choose not to imbibe.

Sleek, Sexy Design

Hotelier Konstantinos Kaloutsakis also served as Abaton's architect during the resort's construction in 2018. The attention to detail is evident around every corner. Here's what you can expect, at check-in and beyond.

  • Lean Into Nature: Natural materials including marble, stone and wood to impart an earthy but chic Med aesthetic at the Abaton, adding to the dreamy feel.
  • Spacious Shared Areas: The expansive lobby, reception area, gym and F-zin Ivy League restaurant feel fresh with cool color palettes and huge windows looking directly out onto the sea below.
  • Sense of Space: Abaton's architecture is truly in harmony with the sea, a fact that is witnessed across the resort owing to the sleek, sexy design of the entire complex.

While I was admittedly hesitant to even step foot off the resort–I was SO spoiled!–I'm glad I did. If you're looking to experience a bit of Cretan culture, here are some great options close to Abaton.

  • Explore Europe's Oldest City: Knossos, the massive archeological site once home to the Minoan civilization, is an easy drive from the Abaton and well-worth a visit. The UNESCO site is actually considered Europe's oldest city. A stroll through the complex followed by a visit to the nearby Herkalion Archeological Museum is easily arranged by the Abaton's concierge service.
  • Take a Hike: If you're looking for a challenge, consider a hike through the stunning Samaria Gorge. The Roza Gorge is slightly more rugged where you can easily spot birds of prey and other wildlife.
  • Tracing Greek Mythology: The Abaton's staff would be happy to hire a driver to take you to Dikteon Cave, the legendary birthplace of Zeus.

All facets of the Abaton–from the sumptuous food and drink offerings to the restful seaside–left me chilled out and peaceful.

  • Stress Melts Away: Even after just a few hours on-site, gazing at the Aegean and listening to its waves from my patio felt like pure bliss, while strolling the resort's beaches and grounds was truly restorative.
  • Service, Attention to Detail: A fantastic spa experience, personal pool access and top-notch service left me wanting for nothing.
  • Amenities Perfect For Couples: The Abaton's multiple amenities, in the gorgeous suites and stunning shared spaces, are just the antidote for couples seeking relaxation and a recharge from their busy lives back home.
