Smoked salmon eggs Benedict at Black Walnut Cafe in Colleyville

Mother’s Day is one of the most popular brunch days of the year, and there’s no quicker way to discover that than to try to do a guide to the brunches.

As on Easter, it can be tricky: Places that usually aren’t open on Sunday, or that don’t usually do brunch, have special brunches. Places that usually do brunch sometimes do special items, and sometimes don’t/

Below is just some of what we turned up, and we’re sure there’s more out there that we’ll try to add. Many seatings are limited, so it’s important to call ahead for reservations, and check websites and Facebook pages for updates.

Bird Cafe: The Sundance Square restaurant’s Mother’s Day brunch will include items such as Jumbo Lump Crab and basil cake with pickled sweet chilies and Romanesco, and a pan-fried Arctic char. And then there are the desserts (Passion Fruit Pavlova with tropical fruits and nasturtium petals, strawberry rhubarb pie). And the cocktails ...

Black Walnut Cafe: The first Tarrant County location of this chain, recently opened in Colleyville, will join with its corporate siblings in serving Mother’s Day brunch till 4 p.m. Sunday (lunch and dinner menus will also be available). That’s a pretty big selection of benedicts, pancakes, French toast, and pastas, but we’re betting the gelato stand and the coffee bar will also catch your eye.

7 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday (brunch served till 4 p.m.), 1205 Church St., Colleyville, 682-235-5100, www.blackwalnutcafe.com. Locations also in Flower Mound, Coppell, Frisco and Allen.

Blue Mesa Grill: Blue Mesa will expand its popular brunch’s hours to 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Mother’s Day at all locations, and will offer a special Saturday brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Arlington, Addison, Plano and Dallas locations. The $22 buffet features Adobe Pies, a street-taco station, enchiladas, chicken-and-waffles, sweet corn cakes and more (including a dessert list that’s practically a buffet itself). Champagne or mimosas, as well as coffee and non-alcoholic drinks, are included in the price. Children 6-11 are $7; children 5 and under eat free.

8 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday, 1600 S. University Drive, Fort Worth, 817-332-6372 and 550 Lincoln Square, Arlingtion, 682-323-3050. Locations also in Addison, Dallas and Plano. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday brunch at all DFW locations except Fort Worth. http://bluemesagrill.com

Buffalo West: The west Fort Worth steakhouse will have a special brunch menu with Mother’s Day exclusives — including a $47 bone-in rib eye with baked potato or sweet potato and salad bar; Faroe Island salmon ($39); roasted Cornish hen ($31) and more —in addition to its regular brunch men. Eliot Zirlin will be at the piano till 3:30 p.m., playing some special songs for the day.

Cafe 1187: Closed since February after chef Michele Tezak broke her leg in a fall, the restaurant in a rural area of far southwest Fort Worth will reopen for Mother’s Day, and hopes to resume regular service not long after that. The Mother’s Day lunch menu includes such items as Beef Burgundy with onions, mushrooms, and glazed baby carrots over buttered parslied noodles; and a Southwestern Strata stuffed with sausage, veggies, and cheese. Desserts alone sound worth the drive: fudge pie, chocolate-Grand Marnier pound cake, coconut buttermilk pie, and we didn’t even list all of them (for a full menu, check out Cafe 1187 on Facebook). Cafe 1187 is not very big, so if you want in on this, act fast. Reservations required.

$35-$39 (soup/salad, soda/tea/coffee, tax, gratuity included). 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., 8780 FM 1187 E., Fort Worth, 817-443-1473, http://www.cafe1187.com.

Ellerbe Fine Foods: Mother’s Day is one of the few days that the Magnolia Avenue restaurant does brunch, and this year it’s doing it with a four-course prix-fixe menu with a few options among the courses, although it’s the Texas honey and lemon ricotta cheesecake that’s got our attention. $40 per person; additional $12 for bottomless mimosas or poinsettias.

Grace: The upscale downtown Fort Worth restaurant reserves brunch for special occasions, and Mother’s Day is one of them. Of course, this is a place where the brunch menu includes Duroc pork carnitas, and the “Eggs Benedict” — we didn’t add the quotation marks — include lump crab and béarnaise sauce. Plenty of Grace’s usual menu items are listed on the brunch menu as well. Grace will also be open for dinner on Sunday.

10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 808 Main Street, Fort Worth, 817-877-3111 littleredwasp.com

Max’s Wine Dive Fort Worth: Aside from regular brunch items like the southern fried chicken and a fried egg sandwich that’s bigger than some moms’ arms, Max’s will feature new executive chef Victor Villarreal’s toasted sourdough bruschetta with housemade ricotta, topped with pineapple and bacon chutney, then with hazelnut bread crumbs with local honey and salt.

10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2421 W. Seventh St. No. 109, Fort Worth, 817-870-1100, http://www.maxswinedive.com

Several entrees will be available; the ones that intrigue us the most are the chicken-fried quail and waffles, the Brunch Burger (with bacjudgeon, jalapeño hollandaise and, of course, a fried egg); barbecue shrimp and grits, and a pulled-pork eggs Benedict (there’s that jalapeño hollandaise again).

Southern Oaks Golf Club: We have to tip our too-fancy hat to Southern Oaks, which is doing a dual Mother’s Day/Kentucky Derby dinner on Saturday night, and patrons are encourages to show up in big hats or bow ties. Mint juleps and champagne juleps will be available; the dinner includes bourbon brown-sugar beef tenderloin, southern cheese grits and corn pudding; and desserts are Derby pie and bourbon balls.

World of Beer: One of the things WOB is known for — aside from, well, beer — is its “Beerunch.” On Mother’s Day, moms will get $5 off the price of Beerunch, which includes such items as hangover skillets and chicken and waffles. It’s not all beer: bloody Marys are available. But so are “beer-mosas.” Lindsay Hightower will provide acoustic music at World of Beer Fort Worth.
