Nighttime the right time for Black Market Bakery in Fort Worth

The lights stay on all night at Nonna Tata, but not for pasta.

Four mornings each week, Black Market Bakery & Cafe opens around midnight, when two night owls take over Nonna Tata and serve up burgers and breakfasts for West Magnolia Avenue.

It’s the ultimate underground restaurant: an after-hours cafe with only a tiny sign and no way to know it’s there, except for the cars parked all around into the wee hours.

Chef Evan Williams, a bartender at The Usual, and baker Giovanna White cook and serve a few clever nightly specials.

At sunup one recent morning, Black Market Bakery started the day with homemade chicken-biscuit sliders topped with pimento cheese.

A chorizo-egg taco came with plenty of fresh pico, and instead of boring hash browns, Black Market Bakery served sweet-potato hash browns with goat cheese.

White had sold most of her desserts, but had a couple of cookies for the morning commute.

Expect a somewhat random selection of burgers and breakfasts, and leave plenty of time — it’s all cooked to order.

Black Market Bakery & Cafe opens at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and serves until 8 a.m. Thursday through Sunday mornings; 817-223-6909, facebook.com/BlackMarketFood.

Lineup change

Common Ground Grill & Tap, a new TCU-area restaurant, is switching up the menu next week.

New chef Andrew Derden is taking over the burgers-and-sandwiches menu, originally designed with help from Gas Monkey/Dagwoods chef David Hollister.

Common Ground is a cozy bar-and-grill on South University Drive one block south of West Berry Street.

It’s open for lunch and dinner daily at 3201 S. University Drive; 817-882-6163, commongrounddfw.com.

Big ol’ bacon

Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse now serves a $14.50 slab of bacon.

I am not kidding. The new Double Eagle menu includes a thick slice of bacon au poivre with a bourbon-molasses glaze.

Other additions: escargot ($15), lobster bisque ($12) and sea bass on crab fried rice ($43).

The steakhouse continues to offer a $55 combo menu Sundays with steak and a choice of crab cake, scallops or shrimp.

It opens nightly at 5 p.m. and also will open Mother’s Day for a (hopefully) sunny brunch on the balcony. 812 Main St., Fort Worth. 817-877-3999, delfriscos.com/steakhouse/fort-worth.
