Eats Beat: A Max’s update, and gear up for Mardi Gras
First, a warning about Valentine’s Day:
That great dinner deal at Max’s Wine Dive was a misprint.
The Valentine’s dinner is $65 per person, which is still good for sea bass or sirloin with dark chocolate pot de crème.
Don’t blame chef Stefon Rishel. The publicist owned up, and Max’s wants anyone with reservations to know the correct price.
(No, they don’t have to sell it at a mistaken price. Don’t try that.)
That’s only $10 less than Ellerbe Fine Foods, which priced its Valentine’s weekend dinner at $75 this year for panéed fish or grilled steak with andouille-cheddar grits and either a berry mousse cake or a citrus-coconut tres leches cake; 1501 W. Magnolia Ave., 817-926-3663, ellerbefinefoods.com.
(Many fine-dining restaurants and steakhouses are booked.)
Smothered, with love
Like love, Waffle House is eternal.
The WH locations in Benbrook and Lake Worth will be decorated and dimmed to serve a special Valentine’s menu by candlelight, a company tradition; wafflehouse.com.
King cake time
Before Valentine’s comes Mardi Gras.
Duffey’s Kolache Bakery is offering a holiday twofer: Mardi Gras king cakes to celebrate Fat Tuesday on Feb. 9, and chocolate-cherry kolaches for Valentine’s the following weekend; 6 a.m.-noon daily, 8653 N. Beach St., 817-428-2777, duffeyskolachebakery.com.
For restaurant celebrations, look to Bayou Jack’s in Roanoke, Pappadeaux Seafood or Razzoo’s Cajun Cafe.
More from Armenta
The ink was not yet dry on DFW.com last week when Felipe Armenta announced yet another new Fort Worth restaurant.
Already busy at his new Press Cafe, Armenta has agreed to take over a Crockett Street vacancy and redo it as a Cork & Pig Tavern, his West Texas concept.
Unlike Press Cafe and his other restaurants, Pacific Table and The Tavern, this isn’t a startup. He’ll bring the menu and chef Virginia Dalbeck’s matching cocktails from the Odessa and San Angelo locations, with San Angelo ex John Nestor joining and a fellow alumnus of Houston’s/Hillstone, Ed Buenaventura, over the operation.
Like Armenta’s other restaurants, Cork & Pig will have all-ages appeal, he said. The menu highlights wood-fired pizzas along with burgers and grill items.
Cork & Pig will add a front patio, redecorate and open by May, Armenta said; 2869 Crockett St., corkandpig.com.
