Eats Beat: Fried chicken, barbecue, steaks – and $1 tacos
Fried chicken is coming to West Magnolia Avenue, and barbecue is not far behind.
Memphis-based Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken will open in spring in a 1940s building at 1065 W. Magnolia Ave., continuing its tradition of opening city locations instead of sprawling to the ’burbs.
Gus’s recently started expanding from its original, 60-year Mason, Tenn., home. The first Texas Gus’s is open in downtown Austin.
It’s spicy and lightly battered, the way Texans like it.
Along with Gus’s, fast favorite Heim Barbecue is listed on paperwork filed by landlord Will Churchill for a full-service restaurant at 1109 W. Magnolia Ave.
The Heims say only that they’ll be cooking in the Kent & Co. wine bar parking lot during ArtsGoggle on Oct. 10 and will have a big announcement then.
The address listed on the paperwork is a former Asian fusion restaurant in a landmark 1921 building on Magnolia, long ago Kolius Grill and recently usually a bar or Asian restaurant. The current Heim’s is a trailer off South Main Street.
Barbecue all-stars
Heim will join Cousin’s Bar-B-Q to represent Fort Worth on Saturday at the annual Smoked Dallas barbecue and music festival in downtown Dallas.
BBQ on the Brazos of Cresson also will serve at Smoked, along with the royal families of Central Texas barbecue: the Muellers of Taylor and the Blacks and Schmidts of Lockhart.
Tickets for the 1 p.m. opening cost $90, or $45 for the regular festival, 2-5 p.m.
It’s in Main Street Garden Park, 1902 Main St.; 214-922-4848, smokeddallas.com.
Brake for $1 tacos
Yes, it’s that magical time of the year: National Taco Day.
The industry celebration is Sunday, but the best-known local celebration will be Monday, when Fuzzy’s Taco Shop sells all the basic tacos for $1.
Best bet is always fish or shredded beef, but the deal applies to all tacos except fajitas, shrimp or “California heat.” There are 45 Fuzzy’s locations across Dallas-Fort Worth, including the home base at 2917 W. Berry St.; www.fuzzystacoshop.com.
Some other restaurants will give discounts Sunday.
A Lambert sighting
Much-missed chef Lou Lambert will grill steaks Oct. 17 and host a charity dinner for the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Tickets are $250 for the dinner, which includes wines, beers and songs by Luke Wade in Lambert’s Hunt & Fish Social Club catering hall; 817-336-4949, alz.org/northcentraltexas.
