Eats Beat: Tillman’s Light? Look for Market + Table

After her Hell’s Kitchen TV gig, chef Kalen Morgenstern was ready for a move.

But it won’t require moving. The new Market + Table is moving in with her as chef, filling the space left when Tillman’s closes Saturday night.

Yes, Tillman’s is closing.

Yes, that means no more s’mores unless you go to the other Tillman’s, in Dallas’ Bishop Arts District.

“We’ve loved it here for five years, but I think Fort Worth is ready for a new concept,” she said.

“The people living here [in West 7th Fort Worth] want something that’s more of a daily market cafe. … People are coming here two, three, four times a week, and they want more variety and choices.”

Actually, Market + Table will be separate concepts. Market is a sandwich cafe and takeout deli-grocery with juices and coffees, while Table is a more upscale dinner restaurant in Tillman’s old banquet room.

“I was born in Texas and raised Southern, so I’m not going to get too far from home base” at Table, she said.

A press release calls Table an “immersive dining experience.”

While Market will be open daily, Table will only open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday nights beginning in mid-November.

Market will open by mid-October, Morgenstern said. The former Tillman’s bar and dining area will be remodeled for a service counter and cafe seating.

In the same press release, co-owner Todd Fiscus said Tillman’s needed to change because the “dining arena has changed. … We need some fresh and clean eating around us.”

Not the Spot

OK, so maybe Aledo wasn’t ready for city dining.

Slice the Pizza Spot, an artisan pizza cafe with a laid-back Austin vibe, will close for good Saturday night after trying for nearly a year to eke out business.

“It was growing, but not as fast as we needed,” said part-owner Kyle Jarrell.

“We were gaining business, but out here people don’t want to wait for pizza.”

Sometimes their meticulous style and stone-fired oven meant an hour’s wait, he said.

Plenty of time

Yes, there is still one week left in DFW Restaurant “Week.”
